Orphan Mother

The child who survives the abuse of her parents,
May yet grow to be a parent herself.

She does so with no parental skill,
no nurture,
no emotional well from which to draw.

She conceives,
grows,
and births
hungry creatures while she herself is starved.

The tide of time drags her up,
scraping her skin scarred.

She who is nursed on poverty must manufacture plenty.

Nothing awakens the orphan in her more than motherhood.
